The champions' top brass spent hours at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening staging an inquest into poor start that continued with loss to Southampton

The Blues’ boss said: “Go straight to the players. If they tell you they don’t trust me, that is the only thing that can make me resign. The only thing.”
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is understood to have remained at Stamford Bridge until around midnight after the 3-1 defeat by Southampton as the club conducted an urgent inquest and examined their options.
The champions' hierarchy were alarmed by the shambolic nature of the defeat, which saw fans turn on Mourinho and left his players incredulous as Nemanja Matic, thrown on as a half-time substitute, was himself replaced after just 26 minutes.
That humiliation is understood to have gone down particularly badly, despite the Special One’s insisting he did not mean to hang the Serb out to dry.
