Show Of Shame: What Two Pastors And Church Members Did In Church

The Enugu state police command has locked up the Mount Street Parish of Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria after two pastors and their loyalists engaged in a free-for-all fight.
The two pastors and their supporters fought over who should take control of the parish.
Apparently there has been an ongoing crisis in the church for more than three years as two persons, Professor Paul Emeka and Dr. Chidi Okoroafor are each laying claims to the leadership of the church, a position known as General Superintendent, a matter that is currently before the Supreme Court, Vanguard reports.
The drama was said to have started on Sunday, July 19, when one of the pastors, Rev. Nathaniel Udeze, came with letters of posting and other court documents as part of preparations to be installed as the new pastor at the parish.

According to him, he had been officially posted there by the leadership of the church under Rev. Paul Emeka, adding that Rev. Amaechi Agbo had been transferred to another parish since May 2015.
He was however resisted by Rev, Agbo and his supporters, who accused him of being an intruder and vowed not to allow him take over.
The trouble degenerated when supporters of both pastors arrived and started sharing different versions of Sunday school manual in preparation for the main service.
Both pastors threw caution to the wind and reportedly started shoving each other and their supporters followed suit, engaging in fisticuffs.

The police had to be called to restore order. On arrival, the divisional police officer, Dennis Ayara tried to calm the warring parties but all his efforts to bring the situation under control proved futile.
The led to the eventual shutdown of the church premises as the police cordoned off the place and put it under lock, while the leaders of the two factions were asked to report to the station.

Nigeria’s light sweet crude falls to $50.10 a barrel

Crude oil prices struggled to stay around $50 yesterday, amid persistent concerns over global oil glut as against the $53.79 it recorded the previous day.
Specifically, Nigeria’s light, sweet crude futures for delivery in August traded at $50.10 a barrel, down four cents, or 0.1 per cent, on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
This is far below the approved $53 per barrel benchmark for crude oil in Nigeria’s 2015 budget. It lost 1.5 per cent in the previous session, falling to a near four-month low of $50.15 a barrel.
Brent, the global benchmark, fell 45 cents, or 0.8 per cent, to $56.65 a barrel on ICE Futures Europe. WTI futures were off around 1.5 per cent to trade near $50.50 a barrel. Last week, Iran struck a nuclear deal with several world powers that, among other things, will end an oil embargo and allow the country to increase production for export.
Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that the declining crude oil prices will have severe impact on Nigeria’s economy. In its latest 2015 World Economic Outlook titled: “Uneven Growth: Short- and Long-Term Factors,” released recently, the IMF acknowledged that Nigeria and some of the region’s oil-exporting countries with limited buffers have started to adjust to the decline in oil prices.
The IMF reiterated the need for oil-exporting countries to enact prompt fiscal adjustments, even as it advised that oil importers’ policy stance should strike the right balance between promoting growth and preserving stability.
The report stated that oil price decline will have a severe impact on the region’s oil exporters, including Nigeria, with 2015 growth for those countries marked down by more than 21⁄2 percentage points.
In contrast, projected growth in the region’s oil importers is broadly unchanged, as the favorable impact of lower oil prices is offset to a large extent by lower prices of commodity exports.
It added that key downside risks include further downgrades to growth in major trade partners, a sharper-than-expected tightening of global financing conditions, and mounting domestic security threats and policy uncertainty ahead of elections.
According to IMF, oil-exporting countries should enact prompt fiscal adjustments, while oil importers’ policy stances should strike the right balance between promoting growth and preserving stability.
It stated: “Sub-Saharan African growth for 2014 as a whole remained solid at five per cent, albeit lower than the 5.2 per cent growth in 2013.
Growth in South Africa fell from 2.2 per cent in 2013 to 1.5 per cent in 2014, on account of mining strikes and electricity supply constraints. Elsewhere in the region, growth, driven by strong investment in mining and infrastructure and by private consumption, held up well, especially in the region’s low-income countries.
Exceptions were Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, where growth declined sharply as a result of the Ebola epidemic, which caused severe disruptions in agriculture and services and the postponement of mining development projects.” In addition, it noted that: “The region’s oil-exporting countries, especially those with limited buffers (Chad, Nigeria), started to adjust to the decline in oil prices.
This adjustment led to lower growth than was previously expected. By contrast, growth in the region’s oil-importing countries was broadly in line with previous projections, although with considerable variation across countries.
“Fiscal and current account balances worsened significantly in the region’s oil-exporting countries, reflecting ambitious infrastructure investment agendas financed with shrinking oil revenues. Fiscal balances also deteriorated in other parts of the region, reflecting continued fiscal strains in the Ebola-affected countries and strong exceptional spending in Mozambique.”

World Bank Pledges $2.1 Billion To Buhari To Rebuild Nigeria’s Boko Haram-Ravaged North-East

The World Bank unveiled a plan to spend $2.1 billion rebuilding the infrastructure of Nigeria’s northeastern region at a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Washington, DC.

The World Bank unveiled a plan to spend $2.1 billion rebuilding the infrastructure of Nigeria’s northeastern region at a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Washington, DC.
The plan would tackle some of the infrastructure problems faced by residents who have been most affected by the attacks of Boko Haram, which is based in the area.  According to his spokesman Femi Adesina, President Buhari also stressed the need to incorporate into the plan the resettlement of the more than one million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the North-East.
The funds will be spent through the World Bank’s International Development Agency in the form of low-interest loans, which will be interest-free for the first ten years and then accrue at a below market rate thereafter.
Representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) present at the meeting said that their organization would also spend $300 million on malaria immunization in Nigeria. Additionally, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Dangote Foundation said they would collaborate on the fight against polio in the country, which could soon be declared polio-free.

Alleged killer of Lagos lawyer pleads not guilty

A twenty-four-year-old man, Oluwaseun Oladapo, charged with the killing of a Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Kunle Fadipe, said on Wednesday that he is not guilty.
The accused has also been charged with the killing of Fadipe’s mother-in-law, Mrs. Cecilia Owolabi.
He was re-arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Wednesday.
But he pleaded not guilty to each of the five counts filed against him by the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The said counts bordered on murder, robbery and assault occasioning harm, said to be contrary to Section 221, 295 (2)(a) and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.
In the particulars of the offences, the prosecution alleged that the accused person, while armed with a knife on the night of July 4, 2014, invaded Fadipe’s house at Harmony Estate, Ifako-Ijaye, robbed  the victim of huge sums of money and thereafter stabbed him severally with a knife, leading to Fadipe’s death.
A portion of the charges also read, “That you, Oluwaseun Oladapo‎, on the 4th day of July 2014, at about 03:00hrs at No. 1 Harmony Estate, Ifako-Ijaiye, Iju Lagos, in the Ikeja Judicial Division, whilst armed with an offensive weapon, murdered one Cecilia Owolabi by stabbing her on the chest, and assaulted one Abiola Owolabi and Folahanmi Fadipe by stabbing them with a knife.”

After the plea of the accused had been taken, the prosecution, led by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. Idowu Alakija, informed the court that it was ready to open trial, adding that its witnesses were in court.
But counsel for the accused person, Worer Obuagbaka, told the court that he had only just been briefed on the case and needed time to study the file and prepare for the defence of the accused person.
Obuagbaka said, “The proof of evidence was served on me this morning less than an hour ago. My perusal of the proof of evidence showed that there was autopsy report available. This is a serious offence and the defendant needs adequate time to prepare for the trial.”
After listening to the parties, Ipaye said the defence deserved to be given sufficient time to prepare for trial and consequently adjourned till August 17 and 18 for trial to commence.
Oladapo was reportedly apprehended on the night of July 4, 2014 at Harmony Estate, Ifako-Ijaye, Lagos, by men of the Oodua Peoples Congress in the area, while allegedly trying to flee after fatally stabbing Fadipe and attacking his family.

Parents Protest At Unilag Over Discrimination In Admission Cut-Off Mark

Aggrieved parents of candidates seeking admission into the University of Lagos (Unilag), western Nigeria, on Wednesday staged a peaceful protest against the institution for refusing to adhere to the cut-off mark set by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

JAMB had at a meeting with educational stakeholders last week agreed that universities are to use the 180 benchmark as requirement for admission, while the polytechnics and colleges of education are to use 150.
But the University of Lagos management insisted that the cut-off mark for admission into the institution is 250.
This drew the ire of students and their parents alike who decided to stage a peaceful
protest at the university gate for about four hours.
They also want the Registrar of JAMB Prof. Dibu Ojerinde to go.
The protest not only caused traffic jam at the entrance of the university, it later resulted in the forceful closure of the gate.

US trip: Buhari rejects gay marriage, says Presidency

The Presidency on Wednesday admitted that the issue of gay marriage came up during President Muhammadu Buhari’s four-day official visit to the United States.
It said the President however rejected the idea point blank.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed this on his Twitter handle on Wednesday.
Adesina said the issue of gay marriage was raised in one of the meetings the President attended in Washington DC on Tuesday.
He however refused to disclose which of the meetings attended by the President the issue was raised.
The Presidential spokesman said when the issue came up, Buhari made it clear that sodomy is against the law of Nigeria and abhorrent to her culture.
“The issue of gay marriage came up here yesterday (Tuesday). PMB (President Buhari)  was point blank. Sodomy is against the law in Nigeria, and abhorrent to our culture,” Adesina posted on his Twitter handle.

Pastor fails to resurrect after telling people to bury him alive

Five members of the same family were charged with the murder of a prophet who had been called to their their home in the village of Mazonde, Zimbabwe to help them cleanse their house of evil spirits.
According to local newspaper, Zed 24 News, the accused family identified as Leanmore Mutero, Tonderai Muswere, Michael Muchengeti, Manasa Mutero and Nicholas Mutero, appeared at the High Court in Harare facing a murder charge for participating in the death of self-professed Prophet Shamiso Kanyama, who accidentally died during a healing ceremony.
Pastor Kanyama had reportedly asked his followers to bury him alive so that he could summon more cleansing powers to heal the family that had been plagued by mysterious deaths.
Zed 24 News reports that High Court Justice Owen Tagu heard how on that day, the late pastor had been invited to attend the home in the Muzarabani district, which is situated along the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border, by their priest, Zvidzai Muchengeti.
The five men had requested the priest to help them clean their home of evil spirits, because it was causing mysterious deaths in their family.
Responding to their request to perform a healing ceremony, Kanyama had ordered his followers to dig a grave and bury him alive because that was the way he summoned more healing powers to ward off evil spirits. However, the plan backfired on the prophet when instead of being resurrected as he supposed, the men dug up the grave again to find him dead.
Kanyama helped to dig his own grave before praying and jumping inside, Father Zvidzai, who has turned State witness, told the High Court. He continued that after laying face down in the grave, he ordered his followers to start covering him with soil.
He pegged a grave-shaped pit in front of my hut and asked for help to dig the pit,” Zvidzai continued. “Deceased requested to be buried alive so that he would gain power to drive away the evil forces.”
Fearing for the life of the prophet as the men were in the process of filling the grave, he requested the men to stop what they were doing, Joseph Taderera told Justice Tagu.
However, they ignored his pleas when Kanyama urged them to continue the process of burying him alive, stating that he would rise from the grave unharmed.
“I warned the men about the danger of their actions, but my advice fell on deaf ears because Kanyama shouted, telling me that I am disturbing his angels, and urged them to continue filling the grave, saying that he would later come out alive,” Taderera said.

NYSC to deploy first class graduates to universities – DG

The Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, on Wednesday said graduates with first class degrees would, henceforth, be deployed to teach in universities and other tertiary institutions.
Olawumi said this in Kaduna at a two-day pre-mobilisation workshop for the 2015 Batch ”B” NYSC programme.
He said the new posting policy was to properly mobilise the right manpower to boost the education sector.
“All corps members who graduated with First Class honours Degrees and Diplomas will be posted to tertiary institutions for effective utilisation of their manpower.
“ The posting policy of the scheme is being vigorously implemented for the achievement of the desired impact.
“ I, therefore, appeal to the authorities of all tertiary institutions of learning to reciprocate this gesture by accepting and offering them permanent appointments after service.“
The NYSC D-G disclosed that an online certificate verification procedure would be introduced to make participation in the scheme more transparent.
He said that the verification procedure was to promote smooth interface between the scheme and the public.
“ This is focused at further simplifying the procedures for certificate verification and enquiries as to whether some individuals participated in national service by making the process more transparent and less cumbersome.“
Olawumi said the workshop would holistically review the scheme, identify and eliminate areas of difficulties that might crop-up during call-up formalities.
“Pursuing its firm resolve to ensure that the mobilisation process is transparent and 21st century compliant, the management of the scheme introduced the online registration platform to ease the entire exercise.
“The initiative is now widely accepted and applauded by all stakeholders today because the initiative has eliminated cases of registration by proxy and also granted easy access to call-up letters by prospective corps members.
“ Arrangements have also been concluded for the setting-up of a help desk, where prospective corps members can get quick response to the challenges they may face while registering online.”
He said that ICT facilities would be provided to enable prospective corps members have a seamless mobilisation process.
The NYSC boss assured that necessary changes to the format for online registration would also be made in compliance with the NYSC Act.
Olawumi disclosed that 410, 821 corps members had been trained in different skills under the NYSC skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development initiative.
“ We, therefore, call on organisations and well meaning individuals to support the initiative of government, so that nobody is discharged from the national service without being equipped with skills for self employment.“
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was to allow stakeholders review policies and challenges of the scheme.
The theme of the workshop is `ICT and NYSC mobilisation process; towards eliminating identified challenges’.
Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’I, while declaring the workshop open , assured that the Kaduna State Government would discharge its obligation to the scheme.
The governor represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Sports, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Musa, said, “no stone will be left unturned to ensure the safety and security of corps members in all parts of the state.“

NORTH HOLLYWOOD — Vice President Joe Biden will stop by a North Hollywood business today to push for an increase in the minimum wage as a way of putting workers on a “pathway to the middle class,” and his visit is expected to cause some traffic headaches.
Biden also plans to attend an evening fundraiser at the Beverly Wilshire hotel benefiting the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to the White House.
Biden’s visit comes one day after the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to boost the minimum wage in unincorporated areas to $15 an hour by 2020, mirroring the increase already approved by the city of Los Angeles.
According to the White House, Biden’s remarks at Bobrick Washroom Equipment “will highlight the importance of increasing the minimum wage to give anyone who works hard every day the chance to earn a livable wage and get on a pathway to the middle class.”
Biden will also discuss “expanding the availability of overtime protections to make sure that millions of middle-class Americans are getting the extra pay they have earned,” according to the White House.
Biden will be joined at the event by Mayor Eric Garcetti and county Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who led the push for the county minimum wage hike.
Bobrick, which has been in business since 1906, is based in North Hollywood and has six manufacturing divisions in the United States and Canada, according to the company’s website, which touts its “strong commitment to employee development.”
Ninio Fetalvo, spokesman for the Republican National Committee, criticized Biden for taxpayer-funded West Coast swing.
“As Vice President Biden swings through the Golden State on the taxpayer dime, people are wondering if he will challenge Hillary Clinton in the Democrat primary,” Fetalvo said. “But what is clear is that the American people are tired of the same failed Democrat policies that continue to leave the middle class behind.”
Although details of Biden’s travel plans around the Southland have not been released, Los Angeles police advised motorists to avoid selected areas while he is in town. Southbound Rodeo Drive and El Camino Drive from Wilshire Boulevard have already been closed and will remain blocked until 11 a.m. Thursday.

Photo: 3 Year Old Boy Dies After Plunging Into Well.

A three-year-old boy, Emmanuel Samuel, died on Sunday after he fell inside a well in front of a building on Hassan Sule Street, Ita Oluwo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The kindergarten pupil, his elder brother, Timileyin Samuel, and some of their friends were said to be playing around 3pm in the area when the deceased accidentally strayed into the well.
PUNCH Metro learnt that residents and officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, who came to the area after receiving a distress call, had difficulties rescuing the victim due to the depth of the well.
It was gathered that a member of the Oodua People’s Congress later summoned up courage and went down the well to rescue the boy at about 7pm. He brought out the boy dead.
It was learnt that the well was dug about eight years ago by the landlord of the building but was abandoned when it did not produce water.
Some youths were said to have become angry with the landlord for leaving the well open. They reportedly stormed the residence and broke some window glasses.
The landlord, Bamidele Ogunwole, was said to have been arrested on Monday after the incident was reported at the Ogijo Police Division, Ogun State.
The family members of the deceased were still wailing on Monday when PUNCH Metro visited the area. Emmanuel’s mother, Kikelolomo, who spoke in tears, described the deceased as her “everything.
She said,
“He had brothers and sisters, but he was my everything. He was very intelligent and smart. It was his brother that rushed to tell me he had drowned.”
The father, Sergeant Abu Samuel, said what pained him most was the fact that the landlord buried his child without his consent.
“I was on duty when I was called that my son had drowned only to come back home and be told he was dead. To add insult to injury, that man (the landlord) buried my child somewhere in Agodo without my consent,” he said.

Residents described Emmanuel’s death as avoidable. One of them, who identified herself only as Esther, said,
“It is very easy for anybody to get trapped in a well that is left open like this. One of the man’s tenants told me that they had complained several times to the landlord, but he ignored them.”
The lawyer for the family, P.O. Idogun, accused the police of “foot-dragging,” adding that no relative of the suspect had shown up at the police station.
